Since January 2007, SEMSWA has provided stormwater management services for drainage and flood control facilities within its service areas in the City of Centennial and unincorporated Arapahoe County. SEMSWA’s activities include:

• Maintenance
SEMSWA is also responsible for insuring compliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and other environmental regulations, and strives to educate the public about stormwater quality.

Routine Maintenance
SEMSWA maintains the storm drainage system in a regular and equitable way across the system. Our Maintenance Program includes:

Debris, Sediment and Trash Removal from Stormwater Facilities
Infrastructure Maintenance of ponds, manholes, pipes, etc.

Coordination of maintenance needs with Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD)



NPDES Permit Compliance and Stormwater Quality Management
SEMSWA is responsible for compliance with various unfunded federal environmental mandates. Failure to comply may result in fines to the local agencies. Compliance activities include:
Investigating illicit connections and discharges to the storm drainage system and waterways
Enforcing erosion control guidelines and regulations during and after construction
Municipal good housekeeping to prevent stormwater pollution
Public education and involvement in stormwater quality
Mapping of the Drainage System and outfalls


Land Use Review and Coordination
SEMSWA Land Development staff provides input and insures compliance with drainage regulations for new development in the service area. SEMSWA works closely with City of Centennial and Arapahoe County Land Use staff as well as area development, engineering and design firms. Activities include:

Drainage channel at Arapahoe Rd. and Quebec

Review and approval of Drainage Reports and Construction Plans
Permitting, field inspection and enforcement
Master Plan coordination
National Flood Insurance Program compliance

SEMSWA provides information about its stormwater management activities and annual fees through:

Participation in community activities including Western Welcome Week, World Monitoring Day, Race for the Watershed and the Annual Cherry Creek Conference.
